URANUS AREA BUCARESTI

by Administrator 15. April 2009 06:23

The area covered by the buildings of the former “Boulevard of the Victory of Socialism” and “The house of the People” was only 30 years ago a part of the so called Old Bucharest, consisting of small individual houses, several churches, an old market, monasteries and several historical buildings.

This portion of the “Little Paris” was systematically destroyed, in order to be replaced by the monuments of the Victory of Socialism. The inhabitants of old houses were obliged to accept flats in blocks where hundreds of people lived and where it was easier to permanently keep an eye on all of them. Several persons committed suicide, desperate in front of bulldozers attacking their houses, inherited from their parents and grand-parents.

The hole “Palace of the Parliament” complex was build in the period 1980-1990. During the whole period no western government or a big international organization has vigorously protested against this large scale cultural crime (erasing of the past) committed in Bucharest by the communist government, under the ruling of the communist party and guided by its leader Nicolae Ceausescu.

Moving the Mihai Voda Church

This installation recovers the soul of Old Bucharest the way it was before 1977, when it suffered the earthquake that was the excuse to erase it from the map. The architectonical elements, lost forever, come alive again growing from the ground at to their former location, while the magnificent Palatul Parlamentului observes astonished this claim of the lost space.

The lines and volumes, with its lightness, transmit all the weight of a complete district that disappeared, representing actually all the cultural treasures that are being destroyed all over the world.

As you will see in the sketches hereunder, the creative process has been to recover some old buildings that were lost and try to simplify them in order to transmit a very precise aesthetic, schematical look. It will be made of iron curved and prepared for outdoor.
